Green Supply Chain News: Dozens of Shippers, 3PLs and Carriers Win SmartWay Excellence Awards for 2014 – Who Is Made the List?

Lowes Leads the Way by Receiving Its Sixth Award Since 2006

By The Green Supply Chain Editorial Staff

The EPA's SmartWay program, a governmental and industry partnership designed to reduce fuel use and CO2 emissions through innovation in transportation and logistics, has announced its excellence award winners for 2014.

Winners for shippers and 3PLS were announced at the CSCMP annual conference in San Antonio a few weeks ago. A large number of carriers winners were announced shortly after that at the American Trucking Associations' Annual Management Conference in San Diego.

The Green Supply Chain Says:
SmartWay says that in total, 134 companies across all categories have been recognized since the excellence awards were launched in 2006.

SmartWay says winners across all categories are in the top 5% in terms of improving fuel efficiency, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing air pollution.

For shippers and 3PLs, the award winners each year are determined based on superior efficiency and additional actions to reduce freight emissions through effective collaboration, advanced technology and operational practices, a robust system for validating and reporting their SmartWay data, and communications and public outreach.

At the CSCMP conference, the following companies were recognized:

Large shippers: Hewlett-Packard, Lowe's Companies and The Home Depot

Medium Sized Shippers: Johns Mansville, Kimberly-Clark, and SC Johnson

Smaller Shippers: Nordstrom

For 3PLs:

Large 3PLs: Expeditors International, Menlo Logistics, and Ryder Supply Chain Solutions

Small 3PLs: ShipCarsNow (a division of Union Pacific)

For reasons not clear, there were many more excellence award winners across modes on the carrier side, some 44 in total. They can be seen in the table below:

"As SmartWay celebrates its tenth anniversary, EPA recognizes its top carrier partners for the significant strides they have made toward a sustainable transportation future," said EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy. "By saving fuel and keeping carbon dioxide and harmful pollutants out of the air, recipients of the SmartWay Excellence Award demonstrate that fighting climate change and protecting human health is good for business."

SmartWay says that in total, 134 companies across all categories have been recognized since the excellence awards were launched in 2006. In that time, there have been 57 shippers, 3PLs or carriers that have been awarded multiple times.

Lowes leads the way, having been recognized an industry-best six times. Seven firms have received the award five times: JB Hunt, Kimberly Clark, Knight Transportation, Roehl Transport, Schneider National, Sharp Electronics and Swift Transportation.

Many shippers strongly favor working with SmartWay member carriers.
